Nathan Lawrentschuk on Male Contraception

USANZ Member, Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk, recently spoke to the ABC about a world-first clinical trial for a new male contraceptive pill. In this so-called "no scalpel vasectomy" a hydrogel is inserted into the vas deferens where the gel hardens and blocks sperm from exiting. The gel dissolves after two years, offering a breakthrough alternative to permanent vasectomies and female contraceptive pills. Prof Lawrentschuk, the principal investigator on the study, described how the technology fills a "huge gap in the market", noting the trial has been inundated with applicants. The topic of male birth control was subsequently covered in detail in Elle, including a reference to Prof Lawrentschuk's work.

It's great to see our members speaking widely about issues that are so important to the general community.
