USANZ Member Participation at UAA 2023

The 20th Urological Association of Asia Congress was held in Dubai recently, in conjunction with the 12th Emirates International Urological Conference. USANZ President Helen O'Connell AO and CEO Michael Nugara were in attendance, along with several USANZ Members and 2500 Delegates. It was great to see so many familiar names in the program and we want to congratulate all Members who presented their research at the conference.

USANZ Member Participation

The following USANZ Members delivered presentations at the UAA 2023 conference. Congratulations to you all, and thank you for sharing the high standards of Australian and New Zealand urological research with our international colleagues.

In the plenary session on Female Urology / Uro-Gynecology on the second day of UAA 2023, Professor Helen O'Connell AO delivered a session on Optimising Fascial Sling for Female SUI 2023.

Also on day 2, Dr Jason Ooi delivered an abstract presentation on Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Partial Cystectomy for Bladder Pheochromocytoma.

Dr David Winkle presented in the Urolithiasis plenary session on day 3 of the UAA program. David's presentation was on the topic of Stone Management in Pediatric Age Group and the Role of Endo-Urology.

On day 4 of the program, Dr Sanjay Kulkarni presented on Posterior Urethral Reconstruction in a sub-plenary session.

A number of USANZ Members were involved in the Asia-Pacific Society for Andrological and Reconstructive Urology Surgeons (AP-SARUS) session. The aim of this session was to introduce dominant centres of Reconstructive Urology and Andrological procedures throughout the Asia and Pacific area. USANZ Honorary Member Professor Christopher Chapple presented on The Prone Surgical Position for Facilitating Female Urethral Surgery - Urethral Diverticula, Fistulae, And Strictures. Later in the session, David Winkle presented on Post Hypospadias Late Urethral Stricture Disease, and Sanjay Kulkarni discussed Complex Pelvic Fracture Urethral Injury.

There was also a Workshop on Scientific Writing, delivered in collaboration with the International Journal of Urology, Indian Journal of Urology, British Journey of Urology International, and Arab Journal of Urology. Editors and publishers of these journals were brought together in the workshop to discuss why scientific writing is important, how an article should be written, what causes papers to be rejected, and how to choose a journal for publishing your work. As part of this workshop, Professor Shomik Sengupta spoke on the topic of IMRAD and the Format of a Paper.

Prof Christopher Chapple also presented in the lunch education course on Advancing Patient Outcomes in OAB: Translating the Latest EAU Guideline Updates into Clinical Excellence. Christopher's topics of discussion during this course included an EAU Guideline Update on What's New in OAB, and Mirabegron, a Novel Golden Standard in the Management of LUTS/OAB in both Male and Female.

UAA Young Leadership Forum 2023

Dr Prassannah Satasivam and Dr Kapil Sethi were selected to represent USANZ at the UAA Young Leadership Forum, after a call for Expressions of Interest was sent to our Members in April this year. 

Internationally renowned guest faculty participated in this informative and interactive forum for early career urologists, including USANZ Honorary Member Christopher Chapple who presented the following topics: Nocturia: Updated, Comprehensive Approach; Bladder Management - Spinal Cord Injury; and Under Active Bladder Management.

Congratulations again to Prassannah and Kapil on being selected to attend the UAA Young Leadership Forum. 

Best Video Presentation Award

Congratulations to Associate Professor Devang Desai on receiving the Best Video Presentation Award at the UAA meeting. 

UAA President's Address

Dr David Winkle, one of the Past Presidents of our Society, has been serving as the President of the Urological Association of Asia since 2022. David has spent years developing and strengthening the Society's relationships with the 26 Member nations of the UAA, and was instrumental in securing the bid for USANZ to host the 19th UAA Congress in Sydney last year.

David's term as UAA President concluded at the 20th UAA Congress in Dubai. The photo below was taken during his President's Address at the Congress.
