Roe vs Wade

The Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand strongly supports the concerns raised by the American Urological Association about the recent reversal of the Roe vs Wade decision by the Supreme Court of the USA. As a result of this, abortion may and will likely become illegal in some states of the USA.

USANZ respects the laws of the USA, but part of our role includes advocacy for basic human rights and as practitioners in healthcare, we cannot agree to any law that contravenes the basic rights of any individual and oppose any compromise of those rights.

All patients have a right to be fully informed about their care and must be given the choice to make safe decisions for themselves. Furthermore, physicians and surgeons involved in their care must be able to offer guidance and appropriate medical advice without fear of criminal prosecution. 

Any law that takes away those rights goes against our philosophy and obligations.
