Chronic UTI Australia Research
Chronic UTI Australia would like to highlight to USANZ Members some promising news from a recently published study on alternative treatment to prophylactic antibiotics in a cohort of women
with recurrent UTI. The British study was led by Professor Christopher Harding from Newcastle University.
The study compared the efficacy of the urinary antiseptic, methenamine hippurate (Hiprex), to standard prophylactic low dose antibiotics in preventing recurrent UTI in a group of 240 women aged 18 and over. The research concluded methenamine hippurate was non-inferior to prophylactic low-dose antibiotic therapy in helping prevent recurrence of infection and might be an appropriate alternative for women with a history of recurrent UTI.
