Route to Diagnosis Report Released
The NZ Cancer Control Agency (Te Aho o Te Kahu) has recently released a report on 'Route to Diagnosis: People diagnosed with cancer within 30-days of an emergency or acute (unplanned) hospital admission'.
The report is part of their ongoing monitoring to help identify areas where we can work with the sector on improving cancer care and outcomes. It was developed using the same methodology as the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership study published in 2022 in The Lancet Oncology, which looked at 8 cancer types across 14 countries including Australia and New Zealand. That study found that Aotearoa had the highest rates of emergency admission prior to diagnosis for seven of the examined cancers.
The Agency intends to use this report work with Health NZ and other health providers to reduce cancer diagnoses via emergency admission across Aotearoa New Zealand.
The full report is accessible via the Te Aho o Te Kahu website. You can submit via feedback via email to that agency.
