MBS Item Numbers for UroCuff
ANZAUS was approached by members regarding which item number should be claimed for or the UroCuff device currently being promoted by SRS Medical. In response, USANZ Member and ANZAUS Chair, Troy Gianduzzo, sought clarity from the Medical Specialist Services Section of Medicare.
The Medicare representative has confirmed that use of the UroCuff does not meet the item requirements for either Item 11917 or Item 11912. Claiming under these items would represent inappropriate billing. Medicare advise that use of the UroCuff would be claimed under an attendance item, or alternatively under Item 11900 for an isolated urine flow study.
Medicare has also emphasised that “for all medical services funded through Medicare it is the responsibility of the practitioner providing the service to ensure that all of the requirements of the relevant MBS item, as detailed in the item descriptor and associated explanatory notes, have been met and the service is clinically relevant before any Medicare claim is made.”
