USANZ in the Media
On 16 May 2025, USANZ released a media statement: USANZ calling on all men to perform a sixty second check that could save their life.
With the incidence of testicular cancer on the rise and young men in particular being at risk, USANZ urges all men to take time to do a self check to identify any lumps or changes. As USANZ Genitourinary (GU) Oncology Special Adivsory Group (SAG) Leader, A/Prof Weranja Ranasinghe notes, "self checking is so important as testicular cancer is one of the most curable cancers if caught early with a 95-99 percent survival rate". Comedian Michael Shafer was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 26 years old and echoes USANZ in calling for men to self check and speak to a doctor.
Based on this testicular cancer story, the Herald Sun published a newspaper article on Thursday 15 May: Survivor's scare with testicular cancer. This is a full-page story on Jordan Shaddock's testicular cancer journey, with quotes from Weranja Ranasinghe. Download the PDF version.
The online version of the story is available to read on the Herald Sun website (login required). This story alone has had a reach of 1.72 million. The story has also been syndicated to The Daily Telegraph, The Mercury, The Courier Mail and 10 other News Corp mastheads.
Additionally, A/Prof Weranja Ranasinghe was interviewed on the 2CC Talking Canberra Breakfast with Stephen Cenatiempo radio show. Weranja continues the awareness campaign, discussing the importance of self checking and what to do if you notice any changes.
