Spotlight on Urology
Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week, we're pleased to announce the selected EOI nominee who will be representing USANZ at SAUA 2026.
EOI: USANZ Speaker at SAUA 2026
The South African Urological Association (SAUA) will be hosting their 35th Biennial Congress from 21-25 October in Stellenbosch, South Africa this year. In response to an invitation for USANZ to nominate a Speaker to join their Congress, our Society called for expressions of interest in March. We are pleased to announce that a successful applicant has been selected.
Congratulations to Dr Richard Cetti who will be representing USANZ at this event. Richard will be delivering a presentation on PCNL in the era of FANS and DISS. He has provided details on his topic below:
PCNL in the era of FANS and DISS.
This presentation will examine the evolving management of nephrolithiasis in the context of rapid technological advances in retrograde intrarenal surgery. Specifically, it will compare contemporary flexible ureteroscopy (FURS) techniques, including flexible and navigable suction access sheath pyeloscopy (FANS) and direct in-scope suction (DISS), with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and explore how these modalities can be optimally integrated in modern urological practice. A central theme of the presentation will be the complementary nature of these approaches rather than a competitive paradigm. The presentation will emphasise the ongoing relevance of percutaneous skills beyond conventional stone surgery, including their application in managing encrusted stents, complex nephrostomies, fungal balls, upper tract urothelial carcinoma, and patients with altered anatomy, with relevant case examples and videos. Overall, this talk aims to provide a balanced, clinically relevant framework for procedure selection, reinforcing that while technological innovation continues to expand retrograde options, maintaining percutaneous expertise remains essential for delivering comprehensive, high-quality urological care.
USANZ thanks Richard for representing our Society and sharing knowledge with our international colleagues.
