MEDIA RELEASE | embargoed until 27 February 2017

Brisbane Urologist Adjunct Professor Peter Heathcote has been elected as the new President of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ).

He replaces Professor Mark Frydenberg AM who served the role with distinction for the past two years.

Adjunct Professor Heathcote said today he is honoured to lead the Urological Society and looks forward to being a strong advocate for urologists and their patients.

“My objective is to promote the pursuit of excellence and fellowship among our members. Australian and New Zealand Urologists are among the best in the world and I want to ensure our focus on excellence in training, research, clinical practise and, above all, patient care remains paramount,” said Adjunct Professor Heathcote.

“Under the outstanding leadership of Professor Frydenberg the Urological Society has promoted and supported important urological research; the widespread use of active surveillance for men with low grade prostate cancer; and has collaborated with other stakeholder groups to develop a consensus position on PSA testing for prostate cancer.

“This has been a world-first achievement that enhances the management of prostate cancer in Australia and helps end confusion for Australian men and their doctors,” said Adjunct Professor Heathcote.

While Urologists are at the frontline of men’s health it is important to also recognise the important work done in managing female and children’s urological conditions.

“As President I also intend to continue the work initiated by Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and endorsed by USANZ to promote zero tolerance of harassment or bullying in the workplace.

“Fellowship, respect and integrity are cornerstone values of our profession and it is my intention to uphold those promote those values in our specialty.”

Adjunct Professor Heathcote has a special interest in Cancer of the Prostate and Robotic Surgery and Pelvic Oncology and is Senior Urologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Chairman of Robotic Surgery at Greenslopes Private Hospital and an Examiner in Urology for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Having completed Urology Speciality training in Queensland Peter spent further time in Cardiff, United Kingdom and in Toronto, Canada developing Radical Prostatectomy skills.
