Leading urologists gather to discuss emerging issues
Leading urologists from around the world are gathering in Melbourne later this month to discuss global trends and treatments on a range of issues including prostate cancer, kidney stones, and incontinence.
The experts will be meeting for the 78th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, which will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 28 February to 3 March.
“This year’s line up encompassed international faculty alongside local experts in their field of medicine from Australia and New Zealand, which we hope will deliver a dynamic and innovative scientific program,” said Dr Renu Eapen, USANZ 2026 ASM Meeting Convenor.
“There will be workshops and presentations featuring the latest research and developments encompassing the breadth of urologic surgery.” she added.
Among the topics being discussed at the conference, are considerations specialists should be making to treat patients outside the treatment rooms and operating theatres.
A presentation will be given by leading research and urologist Prof Maarten Albersen, from UZ Leuven, Belgium, on advancing care for penile cancer patients beyond oncological outcomes.
“This is an area that has historically been under-discussed in penile cancer care, and every patient, and every couple, has different needs, expectations, and priorities,” said Prof Albersen.
“Some focus primarily on oncological safety, others on sexual function, body image, or relationship dynamics. Our goal is to support all of these dimensions in a structured and accessible way,” he added.
More leading research focussed on patient care will be presented by Prof Anne Suskind, University of California, USA, who focuses on the role of frailty in older adults undergoing urologic surgery.
Prof Suskind will deliver several papers, including one on the ethical considerations of caring for older adults with urinary incontinence.
Other topics to be discussed include:
- Getting on top of sexual health: Engaging young men in a dedicated Men’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Service
- Erectile Dysfunction Management in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Does ChatGPT provide reliable and evidence based answers?
- From Shocks to Scopes: Changing Trends in Stone Surgery in Australia
- Robotic surgery in 2026 and beyond, what's new and coming?
