Demetrius Bagley 1945 - 2022

With sadness, we note this week the passing of Demetrius Bagley, someone to whom many USANZ members remember with gratitude for his role as a visiting speaker on multiple occasions.

He was at the forefront of the introduction of flexible ureteroscopy and mentored numerous urologists in this technique after an initial series of workshops in Sydney and Melbourne in the late 1990s, and then regularly later in conjunction with the USANZ ASM.

Additionally, during the application for specific item numbers for flexible ureteroscopy, his written submission that a simple example of this procedure was the equivalent of a standard rigid ureteroscopy is reflected, to our benefit, in the remuneration applied.

Demetrius was a founding member of the Endourology Society who consistently presented at meetings over more than 30 years, and regularly advocated for greater prominence for USANZ and its members. He had not traveled for some years due to a long illness, but his genuine desire to improve the practice of other urologists worldwide has produced an impact that will be long-lasting.

USANZ thanks Professor Damien Bolton for preparing this obituary.
