The Passing of Dr Michael Rochford

Many of you will have heard the sad news that our friend, long term Urological leader and mentor to so many, Michael Rochford died this week.

As you would recall, Michael was honoured at the 2023 ASM with our highest award, the Society Fellowship. We were thrilled that Michael could receive this in person. Please take a moment to reflect on the citation for the award that summarised his achievements as a USANZ leader:

Dr Michael Rochford graduated from the University of Sydney in 1961. He was awarded the FRCS in 1966 and FRACS in 1972.  He played a pioneering role in the establishment of urological services in Western Sydney and was a visiting medical officer at Nepean Hospital from 1969 to 2004 and Liverpool Hospital from 1971 to 2003. Additionally, he served as a Consultant Urologist to the RAAF from 1972 to 1992.  His service and commitment to his patients was mirrored in that for the profession of urology – there continues to be gratitude for frequently being the one to bring potentially divisive and complex local issues to resolution. He leaves a legacy with his contributions to the SIU, where he served in multiple roles including as President.  His vision and drive allowed SIU to realise the educational, philanthropic, and inclusive principles that differentiated it from other urological societies. Another legacy was the fostering of the careers of young urologists with the establishment of the charitable Australasian Urological Foundation which he chaired from its inception in 1995 through to 2022.  Through his passion and leadership of the AUF, generations of urologists have been supported through research grants and prestigious overseas fellowships.
