Celebrating USANZ Members

USANZ Member involved in world-first cancer surgery

On 21 May 2024, the Herald Sun published an article about a new approach to complex renal cancer that is being undertaken at Austin Health. The surgery is done in two stages, first fixing liver failure then giving patients 1-2 weeks to recover before operating on the rest of the cancer.

USANZ Member, Dr Dixon Woon, was the Urologist on the team. He spoke to the Herald Sun about the surgery, commenting that the standard surgical treatment for this cancer had a high mortality rate of 30-50 per cent, but the new approach reduced that rate to 10 per cent.

The full article is available on the Herald Sun website but does require a subscription. We will update this page if USANZ is granted a license to republish the article for our Members.

Dixon presented this work at the USANZ ASM in February, and was subsequently awarded the Best Oncology Presentation. As part of that prize, he has been invited to deliver the inaugural USANZ Lecture at the ANZUP ASM in July.

It's fantastic to see the innovative work being done by the team at Austin Health. USANZ particularly thanks Dr Woon for taking the time to helping to share this story with the public.

USANZ Members presenting at NCOI

The 32nd National Conference on Incontinence 2024 was held on 22-25 May at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

During the meeting, USANZ Members Dr Sandra Elmer and Dr Michael Whishaw, as part of a team from Royal Melbourne Hospital, presented a workshop on urinary incontinence. The team - which included a geriatrician, continence nurse, and pelvic floor physiotherapist as well as Urologists - discussed a series of complex clinical cases in urinary incontinence assessment and multidisciplinary management, highlighting the utility of video urodynamics.

Congratulations to Sandra and Michael on contributing to this interesting, interactive discussion and for championing the value of working closesly with other specialties to improve patient outcomes.
