NSW Audit of Surgical Mortality - Update
Adjunct Professor Michael C Nicholl (Chief Executive, Clinical Excellence Commission) has provided the following update on the NSW Collaborating Hospitals’ Audit of Surgical Mortality (CHASM) Redesign Project.
Dr Malka and the surgeons of the working group, Associate Professor Brett Courtenay OAM, Associate Professor Mark Sheridan, Dr Pecky De Silva, Professor Neil Merrett and Professor Mohamed Khadra AO have developed tools and processes to improve the way that surgical mortality is reviewed by NSW Health.
An automated process of surgical triage to specifically identify cases requiring independent multi-specialist peer review for potential areas of concern has been developed. In addition, a standardised Surgical Review Form which includes local Morbidity and Mortality meeting outcomes and recommendations, as well as human factors and reflective practice questions, will be introduced in the coming weeks. This process will support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for registration renewal.
If you have any enquiries, please email Dr Valerie Malka, CHASM Redesign Working Group Lead.
