Spotlight on Urology
Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week, we provide an update on Darius Ashrafi's prestigious research award.
AUA Research Scholar Award
USANZ member Darius Ashrafi has been named a 2026–2027 American Urological Association (AUA) Research Scholar, one of the AUA's most prestigious early-career research awards, carrying funding of USD $80,000.
Darius is currently completing a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship at the University of Toronto.
His project applies AI-based digital pathology to a prospective active surveillance cohort at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, under the mentorship of Professor Laurence Klotz, the originator of active surveillance for prostate cancer. The work harnesses AI to extract diagnostic signals invisible to the human eye, with the goal of better identifying which men with low-risk prostate cancer can safely avoid treatment and which require intervention.
