Spotlight on Urology
Spotlight on Urology takes a look at recent activities undertaken to advance urology around the world. This week, we provide an update on recent media about bladder pain syndrome as well as a wrap-up of the KUA Meeting.
Bladder Pain Syndrome Media
Media coverage of bladder pain syndrome (BPS) continues, following the UroNews announcement last week.
USANZ Vice-President Ashani Couchman has highlighted the challenges of recognising BPS, bringing attention to an often overlooked cause of pain.
Speaking on 2GB's Healthy Living program, Ashani described symptoms including “persistent pain, discomfort, frequency, urgency”, explaining that recognising BPS can be difficult because “it can mimic so many different things”.
In addition, Ashani was interviewed by The Senior. Her insights in that article accompany the story of Christine Engelson, who experienced five years of debilitating symptoms before receiving a diagnosis. Christine describes repeated treatment for suspected urinary tract infections and being told her symptoms may be linked to depression. Ashani explains how treating suspected infections without further investigation can contribute to delays as “with no investigation, the diagnosis can be delayed or missed".
Together, the pieces highlight the impact of delayed diagnosis and the importance of taking persistent symptoms seriously, while bringing urological expertise to a wider audience.
Thank you, Ashani, for your ongoing efforts to raise public awareness.
KUA Meeting Wrap-Up
The 78th Korean Urological Association Meeting was recently held in Seoul.
USANZ was invited to nominate a Speaker for the Conference. The successful candidate was Wenjie Zhong, who presented on "Post RALP Positive Margins & Recurrence Risk: A Contemporary, Risk-Adapted Approach in the PSMA-PET, Genomics, and Salvage Radiation Era" as part of the opening Plenary on Wednesday 14 October.
Also in attendance at the KUA Meeting were USANZ President Damien Bolton and USANZ Member Lawrence Kim. Both Damien and Lawrence also contributed to Plenary 1. Damien's presentation was titled "The Pressure We Never Measured: How Intrarenal Pressure Is Rewriting the Rules of Ureteroscopy". Lawrence spoke on "PSMA PET Imaging and Beyond: The Expanding Role in Uro-Oncology" as part of a series "PSMA Imaging & Radioligand Therapy — When, Whom, and How?".
Thank you to Wenjie, Damien and Lawrence for representing USANZ at this meeting and for sending through the below photographs from the event. It's wonderful to see USANZ and local Urology on the world stage!
