Celebrating USANZ Members

Helen O'Connell - AUA Global Leadership Award

USANZ President, Prof Helen O'Connell AO, has been selected for a 2025 AUA Secretary Commendation for Global Leadership Award for advancing collaborations between USANZ and the AUA.

The citation from AUA Secretary, David Pearson, recognised Helen's "outstanding efforts and unique ability to serve as a liaison in building bridges across borders for collaboration with urologic education." He noted Helen's work in this area "has not only opened avenues for communication, but has also fostered educational exchange for young urologists across the globe leaving an indelible mark on the future of our specialty." The award will be presented at AUA25 Las Vegas in April.

Congratulations Helen on this prestigious award!

Best of GU Symposium

The Best of GU Oncology Evening Symposium was held last week in Sydney. This event was a collaboration between ANZUP and USANZ, discussing the latest management and clinical trials research in urogenital and prostate cancers.

The USANZ Speaker at this event was Prof Manish Patel, who delivered a paper entitled "Improving outcomes from bladder cancer: an Australian perspective."

USANZ President, Prof Helen O'Connell AO, joined ANZUP Chair Prof Ian Davis to open the Symposium, and another USANZ Member Dickon Hayne presented about the ANZUP NMIBC Trials.

It's great to see this strong collaboration between USANZ and ANZUP.

Erectile Dysfunction Media Campaign

We previously announced the launch of the PCFNZ Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Patient Awareness Campaign.

The Australian ED campaign has now launched.

The campaign has involved expert commentary by several USANZ Members:

  • Amanda Chung was recently interviewed by SBS World News about "Breaking the Stigma."
  • A/Prof Devang Desai spoke to ABC News about the "trifecta" of cancer, incontinence and erectile dysfunction, and the need for men to speak up about these topics
  • Prof Helen O'Connell AO was quoted in an article on health blog, LIV, highlighting the importance of seeking treatment early

It's great to see these Members adding their voices to the conversation. We will provide further updates as media coverage continues.

USANZ at SLAUS

The Sri Lanka Association of Urological Surgeons (SLAUS) held their annual Conference from 11-14 November in Colombo.

The USANZ Representative at SLAUS 2024 was Dr Rohan Hall. Rohan's session was titled "Proliferation of surgical technologies and its impact on fellowship training for developing countries – now and the future".

As part of the program, Rohan participated in a live laparoscopic and reconstruction workshop held at ASIRI private hospital in Colombo. He performed a buccal graft urethroplasty, whilst the other participating surgeons performed laparoscopic surgery. Rohan shared this picture from the workshop.
