Movember - Report on the Real Face of Men’s Health

The Movember Institute of Men's Health have released a report entitled The Real Faces of Men's Health.

This report brings together countless personal stories as well as a new survey of 1,658 Australian men about their experiences of healthcare.

The report opens with some alarming statistics:

  • 2 in 5 men in Australia die prematurely before they are 75 years old
  • 35 per cent of informal caregivers have to leave or change their job to support the men they look after

The survey also found that:

  • 67 per cent of men wanted to leave their healthcare practitioner due to a lack of personal connection
  • 63 per cent of men felt that gender stereotypes have affected their health behaviours and experiences in healthcare
  • 41 per cent of men reported their healthcare providers actively listened to their concerns

The report involves stories of men feeling both empowered and disempowered when it comes to their health. The report also discusses gendered pressures on men, and how this impacts them seeking or receiving healthcare. Barriers preventing men from seeking help are complex, diverse and interactive.

It is hoped that better understanding the real health experiences of men will help to prevent avoidable conditions and improve the daily lives of men and those closest to them.
