USANZ & ANZUNS 2025 ASM Award Recipients

At the USANZ & ANZUNS 2025 ASM in Perth, the following Members were recognised with these honours:

Fellow of the Society

Fellow of the Society is the highest honour that USANZ can bestow upon a Full Member, in recognition of distinguished service to the Society and practice of urology. Congratulations to this year’s deserving recipient, Prof Mohamed Khadra AO.

Prof Khadra, known as 'Mo' to his friends and colleagues, made dramatic changes to the clinical practice of Urology at Nepean. He was fundamental in the procurement of the first Public DaVinci Robotic system in NSW. The Nepean Urology department has grown to being one of the most sought after units for our trainees, with over 10 urologists in the constantly growing department. Mo's extra clinical accolades are even more impressive with having authored several books, written and published plays and most recently finished a fine arts degree at University of Sydney.

Mo, we thank you for your outstanding contributions and we honour your legacy as Fellow of the Society.

Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand Medal

This honour is awarded in recognition of exceptional service and leadership that has been provided by Society members in at least one aspect of the Society's work over a considerable number of years. This year, the Medal was awarded to two of our esteemed Members.

Congratulations the first recipient of the Society Medal, Prof Eric Chung. Eric holds professorial academic appointments at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and Macquarie University Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He is the current Leader of the USANZ Male LUTS Specialty Advisory Group and Past Chair of the Andrology group, and serves as an Advisor on the Panel of Clinical Experts (PoCE) for the Australia Government Department of Health. Internationally, he sits in executive positions in various organisations such as the President-elect of the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM), Chair of the Education and Research Office on Sexual Medicine (EROS) at the Asia Pacific Society of Sexual Medicine (APSSM), and member of the International Research Working Group for the American Urological Association (AUA). Eric is recognized as a leader in the field of male sexual, urinary and reproduction. He has been invited as a speaker and surgeon mentor at many national and international meetings and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.

We want to also congratulate the second recipient of the Society Medal this year, Dr John Miller. John has provided guidance and leadership throughout his Urological career in many avenues of USANZ. In addition to being intimately involved in training of South Australia’s Urologists, he was Chair of the Board of Urology from 2009-12 where he oversaw many changes during challenging times for RACS. He has also served as the International Medical Graduate supervisor, an examiner for the FRACS (Urol) until 2024 and multiple RACS committees. He has been active participant in meetings and convened a very successful USANZ ASM in Adelaide in 2015. John has been very active in USANZ governance and served on the Board of Directors as its South Australian Representative on several occasions since 2005. During his career he has developed many overseas contacts, the most prominent in Malaysia. John’s leadership and collaboration played a significant part in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between USANZ and the Malaysian Urological Association.

Congratulations Eric and John!

Honorary Member of the Society

This year USANZ awarded the position of Honorary Member of the Society to Dr Makarand Khochikar. This award is available to any person who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, has made a distinguished contribution to urology or the Society.

Makarand has contributed significantly to the field of Urology via original research, innovations, impactful publications, guest lectures, teaching and mentoring the young trainees (both at national and international level) and while actively working with international societies, study groups, guidelines committees and collaborative work. This was all born out of the large volume of clinical work that has been done under his leadership for the last three decades. The achievements and the accolades he has garnered over the years are true testimony of his dedication, hard work and the distinguished services he has given to the field of urology. It is no wonder that he has just received Distinguished Career Award by SIU.

We warmly congratulate Makarand on this prestigious and well-deserved nomination.
